Feeding FrequencyMy geckos are typically fed three times per week. The typical regimen is 2-3 days of Crested Gecko Diet and crickets 1-2 days a week. Weight IssuesMany novice keepers make the mistake of using weight as a gauge for how healthy their geckos are. The result is often times an obese gecko being fed a diet high in sugars. Obesity is probably the most overlooked health problem of reptiles in captivity. Obesity can cause poor reproduction in females, poor libido in males, as well as many of the same more serious health problems associated with obesity in humans. Any experienced keeper/breeder will tell you that there is a big difference between a fit gecko with good muscle tone and a skinny, dehydrated or malnourished gecko. CricketsMy Crested Geckos receive live crickets on a semi-regular basis. Live prey items are always dusted with either T-Rex "Sandfire Superfoods" Leopard Gecko ICB (Insect Cricket Balancer) or Miner-All in-door formula. The Leopard Gecko ICB is actually identical to all the other ICB formulas and will work for just about any herp that needs calcium/D3 supplementation. Crested Gecko Diet
My geckos are also given straight Crested Gecko Diet (served in small, disposable plastic cups) as a staple, usually three days per week unless we're feeding a lot of crickets that week. In early 2006, the alfalfa "twigs" (as I called them), were removed from the diet and some other modifications were made to result in a smoother texture. The geckos seem to accept the new version more readily than they did in the past. I've actually had to cut back on the number of crickets given to my geckos, as they seem to be filling up on Crested Gecko Diet and not eating as many crickets as they used to. I do not mix baby food or anything else into the CGD. Doing so adds more sugar and effectively skews the ratio of sugars to other key nutritional elements such as protein, slow burning carbs, fiber, vitamins, calcium and other minerals. I typically leave CGD in the cage until we feed CGD again. While it may not sound appetizing to you or I, these geckos eat ripe (rotting) fruit in the wild. Having trouble getting your geckos to eat CGD?It's very important to mix Crested Gecko Diet with enough water. The diet WILL NOT "gel" like it says on the bottle, so don't waste your time trying to mix it with less and less water...it won't work, and the diet will end up too dry for your geckos to eat. I usually mix 2-3 parts water (or more if it's dry in the room) to one part Crested Gecko Diet (by volume). It will seem watery and thin at first, but the geckos don't seem to mind. The food will begin to dry up overnight and although the bottle says to remove it the following day, my geckos continue to eat it for a couple of days.
