Cheesy Out of curiosity, what camera do you own?
Currently I have a Canon Rebel XT and a Canon Powershot A640.
The first is 8 mp, the second is 10.

I own a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-N2 10.1 megapixels.

It is new to me and I'm still learning it, but in time I think it will take some pictures that could be as good as any SLR. I like this camera and it is feature rich. 3" touch screen, Stylus pen (to draw on your pictures and select what you want to focus on), among many other features. As far as point and shoot, this has got to be one of the best.

Well, I don't know about that. Sony's are nice, but they don't have as good picture quality as canons, or even nikon's.  It's more because of the glass they use, and the fact that they aren't quite as high in technology as canon's and Nikons.  Canon's have the best glass, and this translates to better color/less noise.

On the other hand Sony's are very user friendly and pretty good starter camera.

the sony may not be as good as an slr or cannon or nikon, but it will serve my purpose for the time being and it's capable of taking some very nice pictures, my biggest problem is that i haven't ever been a picture taker so it's all new to me.

Yeah, it is hard at first.  General rule of thumb.  I've looked at some of your pictures. You're pretty good at framing and setup (the composition of the phooto.) That's half the battle, really. What you might want to work on though is your focus.  As a general rule of thumb it is best to focus on the eye. Or the part of the gecko that is closest to the camera.  There is nothing worse than a photo where there is a big blurry spot where the head is.

i own a canon S3Is and i love it....6 megapixels, 12x optical zoom, flip out screen and rotatable(if thats even a word, lmao)

i wanted a step up from a point and shoot and this one was perfect. i eventually want an SLR but this one is perfect, just 1 step down. lots of freedom to make lots of adjustements. didnt want to get overwhelmed with an SLR, but that will be my next step

at some point and time i think we will all have an slr. Till then, im going to keep messing with my camera and try to get out of it what I bought it for.

Ill work on focus, It's not always easy though.

do you mean that you think SLR's will eventually take over and point and shoots will be phased out?
if so im going to say that will never happen!
alot of people will always demand a P&S just for ease of use, turn it on and take a pic, not to mention its incredibly small size

with that said i will always have a good point and shoot as a backup as well. for times when i just dont feel like carrying around a large camera

No, p&s will never be phazed out, I just think that as technology evolves and prices of SLR's goes down, more and more people will be using them them p&s for hobby pictures.

Prices of SLR's have already gone down. You can now get a Canon Rebel for 300-500$.  When they first came out they were close to 2k.  And really,I don't think you realize how many people already use Dslr's as amature photographers. The number is astronomical.

I have a Canon EOS 10d. ( We have a love hate relationship)

I also just bought a Fuji finepix s700 (Its coming between the Canon and I)

I love the new Fuji, it takes excellent pics. I haven't had a chance to take too many with it but so far I am satisfied. Other than indoor pics have a teeny bit of noise but I can deal with that.

I currently have a Canon A630 8 MB point and shoot and my original 35 mm Nikon N90.  I still take slide pictures and macro photography is one of my favorite types of pictures to take.  If you take a good macro shot, you will always get a Wow from whoever sees it.  I haven't set up my rig to photgraph my snakes and geckos yet but I am planning on doing it soon.  I will then get the slides scanned Hi-res and put a couple on the site.  I have a macro lens that gets in really tight on small subjects so I can't wait to see the results on my geckos eyes.

I know I am a dinasour still using a 35 mm SLR, but I have been spending all my money on my reptiles lately and can't save up for the Canon Eos I want.  I would have to buy all new lenses too.  I may go with the Nkon D80 or the D2H That way I can keep all my lenses.  You have to be careful with Nikon if you are considering them.  I had a problem with the battery meter on the camera and also heard of someone else having  the same problem with their digital SLR.

I have a Nikon D50 and the only complaint i have with it is that i need a higher model number to use lenses with newer features such as vibration reduction.  The quality of the pictures i take is astounding.
