Today Dec 30, 2009 I have removed a tail for one of my chevron sara hybrid to see if tail regeneration is possible . Its tail was nipped by its hatchmate and was not looking good. I have been waiting to see if it would on its own, but didn't. This is a test to see if the sara's bloodline intergraded into a crested gecko would regrow their tails. As of this date im not aware of any other hybrids that are able to. My chahoua X crested was unable to do so and from what i understand a pure chahoua doesn't regrow from a full tail loss, but the sara will.

Hmmm...I wonder what will happen? I think it was the right thing to take the tail off in a condition like that. I think it would be one ofe the next big things in the reptile business if the tail grew back since it looks so much like a crestie. Maybe we should try some more species with the crestie....

LOL.........yes their born with tails, but also born with the ability to drop tails....Its wores to leave an enfected tail on then let it give my prize gecko get blood poisoning, gangrene or any of the other infectious thing you can get from its tail rotting off. I have been doing this along time and have some idea of what to do. It was with cause. I like how they look without tails, they look like pitbulls.... Grin Grin. How you wrote this comes off alil rude bro.... and most of us dont approve of that....

See, theirs the problem.... Pure geckos Vs. Designer intergrade geckos?, I see these as a designer intergrades, but the pure side see's them as they will "mud up the pure lines" which is possable in the wrong hands. Theirs alot of people that think that intergrades are the next big thing in the reptile trade, but will need pure lines and documentation on lineages.

Agreed Lance. As long as things are documented.  The species you are working with are also fairly prevelent in the trade as well so you it's not as if you are "muddying up" endangered species.  (the problem I mentioned in hybridizing many turtle species).

Depending on how this turns out it could open a door to a whole new designer Crested Gecko.  One that is phenotypically a crested gecko while it has just enough of the genes of a sara or chewie to be able to regenerate it's tail.

Personally I am kinda fond of the frog butts as well.  But this would be an interesting thing to develop.
(I say this because 2 nights ago someone went on a tail biting binge in one of my baby enclosures and six of my animals are now tailess --  I don't particularly care but folks tend to get all pi$$y and think you should sell them your geckos at a reduced price cuz the tail is off)

Steve

P.S. I am still trying to figure out how to cross a crestie with a Leachie without producing a dead male crestie?Huh Huh Huh
I may actually have hit on something with that though.  I produced a Island E leachie that for all intents and purposes appears to be a dwarf.  It is growing very slowly (eats well and is perfectly normal) and was born with a more blunt snout and stockier body than all my other leachies.  It is still too far off to tell how this one will grow out but if it does tend to stay smaller this might be a way to see if a cross like this would work (which I suspect it will not either way) Undecided

Damn, Steve.

Just when I thought that some guys had gotten past that whole Neanderthal thing, you have to go all
"if it's meat, it's DINNER!!"

The only tail I want in my soup comes from an OX!

little update.

its doing great....in perfect health. as far as the tail, the base is starting to turn black. Which is what the sara's do when it starts to grow back, starts black and then turns. other then that.. its hard to tell if the tail will regrow or not still......50/50 chance as of today.
