Does anyone else here have problems with fruit flies. I clean out my cages every 5 days, I use nothing but paper towels for substrate and I wash out food bowls nightly. And yet, every night the uneaten food is festering with fruit fly larva by morning. I hate them. Anyone have any remedies?

Incidentally, if anyone has dartfrogs or anything else that eats fruitflies, I've got you covered. Just kidding.

Unfortunately, the only remedy is to move from frugiferious geckos to carnivores.

You can try the solid yellow insect strips in the room...they help a bit.

I was afraid you'd say that. But at least you got to use "frugiferious" in a sentence. That's a plus in my book.

Stupid flies. I should get a dartfrog or something just so I have something to feed them to.

Just happened to find this in AOL news!!!

Okay-you take a small dish and fill it with wine.

Cover it with Saran Wrap/cellophane and poke some holes in it.  Set the small dish on top of the tank.

Change the wine when it's full of flies.

You can put several dishes around the room/house.

Thats interesting, and come to think of it i was once told to do that with a half water half vinegar mix, but if i recall it didnt work much.  Maybe wine will work better...

Maybe the vinegar/water combo was too diluted to attract the flies?

I've read that a drop of dish washing detergent will break the surface tension so they die upon touching whatever liquid is used. Also some have suggested red wine vinegar.

I've tried cheap whiskey (for those of you old enough to buy), or plain old fly strips.  My cat knows how to open the sliding oor, so we always have a ton of flies (fruit flies & others)

What about pitcher plants? They wouldn't likely be able to hurt the geckos...
